A fabulously elegant Mid-Century Modernist Austrian ice-glass & brass chandelier by J.T. Kalmar, dating from circa 1970.
The chandelier, which was part of the ‘Sierra’ series, is a striking piece of mid-century Austrian design. Designed in the 1960s and produced into the 1970s, these lights capture the glamour and sculptural drama of the era while maintaining the restrained elegance for which Kalmar is known.
The chandelier consists of seven lights – six fanning out over the upper segment and one downward-facing central light – and 18 blocks of thick, textured “ice” glass that cascade around the metal frame over two tiers. The light is in good vintage condition, with age-related wear and patina to the metal parts (see photos). The thick glass segments are all in excellent condition, and the original ceiling rose carries the J. T. Kalmar label.
Founded in Vienna in 1881, Kalmar evolved from a bronze workshop into one of Austria’s leading lighting manufacturers. Under Julius Theodor Kalmar, the firm embraced modernist ideals and collaborated with architects of the Wiener Werkbund, gradually shifting toward contemporary, function-driven design. By the mid-20th century, Kalmar had become synonymous with sophisticated lighting that balanced innovation with tradition. In the 1960s and 1970s, the company gained international recognition for its “ice-glass” chandeliers and wall lights, including the Sierra series, which showcased the firm’s mastery of glass and metalwork. This period cemented Kalmar’s reputation as a key player in mid-century European design, producing luminaires that still define stylish interiors today.
