For sale is a unique, signed, hand-painted ‘Rectified Romance Novel’ by Jake Chapman, produced in 2023 as part of his “Mills & Doom” series.
Released in only a few small batches (see last photo), each of these unique artworks consists of a second-hand Mills & Boon romance novel from the 1970’s or 80s, which has been “signed & improved” by the British artist Jake Chapman, in his typical grotesquely humorous manner. Titled “Backfire”, this 1983 romance by Sally Wentworth is about an actress entrapping a businessman.
Jake Chapman’s style is provocative, grotesque, and intellectually subversive, using shock, dark humour, and chaotic imagery to critique society and human nature. Previously working together with his older brother, Dinos Chapman, Young British Artist Jake Chapman has been producing installations, sculptures, paintings and works on paper since the early 1990s that appal, anger, seduce, and thrill—often simultaneously. An iconoclast to his core, Chapman describes himself as a collection of “traitorous little traits that add up to make the big deplorable trait that is me, me, me.” Such tongue-in-cheek humour underpins all of his work, through which he confronts the horrors and excesses of history, culture, politics, and religion with an unforgiving aesthetic. He does not shy away from representations of sex, violence, and mutilation.
Jake Chapman is represented by industry-leading galleries and collected by major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Tate.
