Item: Chamba “Bush Cow” Helmet Mask
Age : Early to Mid-20th Century

A fabulous Chamba “bush cow” helmet mask from the border region of eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon, dating to the mid-20th century. This sculptural form represents a powerful bush spirit associated with strength, unpredictability, and the threshold between the cultivated village and the wilderness.

Known as “Lang-gbadna” or “Nam Gbalang” among the Chamba people, the mask features a domed cranial form suggestive of a skull, flanked by elegantly curved horns and a projecting facial plane. Subtle ear elements and carved ring details at the horn bases contribute to its expressive and balanced composition. The proportions are compact yet dynamic, indicative of a piece intended for active ceremonial use.

Among the Chamba peoples, such masks were used in masquerade performances associated with funerary rites, initiations, and protective ceremonies, where the dancer—wearing the mask with a full fiber costume—embodied a powerful bush spirit combining animal force and ancestral presence. Although helmet-like in construction, this type was not designed for direct forward vision and would have been worn tilted or elevated, with the performer seeing beneath or around it, reinforcing the transformation from human to spirit; the perforations along the rim once secured the attached costume, confirming its role within a complete ceremonial ensemble.

In good overall condition for a ceremonial object of this type and age. The mask exhibits age-related wear throughout, including surface abrasion, pigment loss, and several shrinkage cracks across the domed head, consistent with natural wood movement over time (see photos). These features are typical of objects that have seen active use and do not detract from its integrity. The horns appear original and intact, with no evidence of later replacement.

A genuine, traditionally used example rather than a later decorative carving, offering both sculptural presence and ethnographic significance. A compelling addition to a collection of African art or tribal sculpture.
