For sale is a striking Op_Art screenprint by Michael Challenger (British, born 1939), titled “Divisable” and dating from 1972.

This rare Artist’s Proof is signed, dated and inscribed in pencil by the artist and reads “Proof. Divisable. Thanks for the swap. Michael Challenger ’72.”, which suggests the piece was offered as a swap.

Offered in its original aluminium frame, the piece has been re-mounted and the print is in very good vintage condition and retains its original intensity of colour. The only issue of note is some age-related marks and scratches to the frame.

Michael Challenger’s early Op-Art (or Constructivist) screenprints are a captivating exploration of optical illusions and geometric precision. These works reflect his fascination with visual perception, employing intricate patterns, contrasting colours, and meticulous line work to create dynamic, pulsating compositions that seem to move and shift before the viewer’s eyes. Challenger’s screenprints from this period demonstrate his technical skill and innovative approach, contributing to the Op-Art movement by pushing the boundaries of how art can engage and manipulate visual experience. These early pieces are foundational in his career, highlighting his commitment to merging aesthetic beauty with intellectual inquiry.
