For sale is a rare set of 3 brass & glass pendant lights designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson for AB Markaryd of Sweden, and dating from the 1960s.
Rare and exceptionally stylish, this set of three pendant lights features thick glass cylinders—each in a distinct shade—encasing an internal perforated brass diffuser. The diffusers are secured with three finger screws to elegant, elongated brass holders. The set is in good vintage condition, with a rich patina consistent with over 50 years of age and use. Notable details include a small chip on the top outer rim of the grey shade, minor chips around some of the screw holes, and surface scratches and marks to the brass components (see photos). These age-related imperfections do not detract from the striking beauty and presence of the lights.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a renowned Swedish designer best known for his poetic approach to lighting design. Trained as a carpenter before studying architecture, Jakobsson brought a craftsman’s sensibility to modernist design. He founded his own company in Markaryd in the 1950s, producing an extraordinary range of lamps and chandeliers that married sculptural form with atmospheric light. His signature use of layered shades, wood veneers, brass, and colored glass softened the starkness of Nordic modernism, creating a warm and inviting glow. Today, Jakobsson’s work is highly sought after by collectors worldwide, admired for its timeless elegance and uniquely Scandinavian refinement.
