For sale is a wonderful vintage African hand-carved NKISI NKONDI Nail Fetish Figure, originating from the area previously known as the Kingdom of Kongo (now DRC), and dating from circa mid to late 20th Century.
Crude in style and visually jarring, these Nkisi (fetish figures) are used for protection and for warding off evil-doers and bad spirits. Nails and other sharp metal objects are aggressively hammered into the statue with vocal abuse, in the belief the more the statue gets hurt, the better it will serve its purpose, with each nail and blade, driven in, energising its powers.
The figure exudes a sense of power and mystery with its striking features and symbolic elements and is sure to be a conversation starter and a statement piece.
